Opening the Mailbag

You're asking, and we're answering.

Introducing "The Mailbag", where we answer three of the most burning questions you have about Byer of Maine products. We have a diverse line of products - from hammocks and hanging chairs to bird homes and folding cots, from lightweight gear to wooden folding furniture.

Coming off one of the busiest summers in our history here at Byer (THANK YOU for your support!), we remain committed to our goal of unparalleled customer service and support. So, without further ado, lets dig into the mailbag...

What's the difference between a Brazilian hammock and a Brazilian-style one?

On the surface, not a whole lot. A Brazilian-style hammock is a traditional

hammock without a wooden spreader bar at the other end - a gentle, U-shaped hammock that flattens out naturally when you lie diagonally across its width.

In general, Brazilian-style hammocks are far more stable their their spreader-bar counterparts. They're not "tippy" and, depending on the size, can often accommodate two or three adults comfortably.

Many of our hammocks are Brazilian style, though we do have some true Brazilian hammocks in our catalog. The Barbados, and the Paradiso models are all woven by hand in Brazil. Not only are they bright, vibrant and attractive, but they also carry the kind of durability and uniqueness that comes with having something handcrafted by the same people who have enjoyed hammocks as part of the tradition of their culture for centuries.

What Makes your bird homes 'eco-friendly?'

Our entire Mango Tree Collection, for starters, is eco-friendly.

Mango trees have an interesting life cycle. They produce fruit for only a 10-15 year period, after which they retire. In Thailand, where our Mango Tree Collection is handmade by local artisans, the trees are then harvested for use in pieces of all kinds.

Even after the homes have been carved from the wood, there's still more. The shavings left from woodworking feed the fire as part of the wood-drying process.

As wonderful and innovated as the story of the Mango wood is as it pertains to our Mango Tree Collection, the homes themselves employ simple measures that fit our motto: "Byer Birding...Always good for the birds!"The homes have no perches, which deters predators from setting up shop, and they have removeable back for cleaning during the off season.

My hammock is damaged. What should I do?
